Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. Each year more than 480,000 people in the United States die prematurely from smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke, that's about one of every five deaths.
Smoking alone kills more Americans each year than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murder, and suicides COMBINED.
Smoking-related illnesses in the U.S. cost more than $300 billion per year, nearly $170 billion for direct medical care, and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to secondhand smoke exposure.
Secondhand Smoke
|
Every year nearly 60,000 non-smoking Americans die from illnesses caused by secondhand smoke. Exposure to secondhand smoke for just 8 - 20 minutes has measurable effects linked with heart disease and stroke. |
Thirdhand Smoke
- Today Show interview with Dr. Nancy Schneiderman, January 2008.
- American Academy of Pediatrics identifies thirdhand smoke as a specific threat to child health and provides links to related research.
