Concealed Handgun Permits
As of July 1, 2025, new requirements have gone into effect for all Colorado residents applying for a new Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) or renewing a Concealed Handgun Permit. Please review the updated requirements for receiving a new or renewed Concealed Handgun Permit below.
Important Information Regarding Concealed Handgun Permits:
- All applications (new and renewal) must be submitted through Permitium - the online CHP Application Software used by Delta County.
- No walk-in appointments are available. If you need to change your name or address or request a replacement permit, you must use the Permitium Application Process for the service you need.
- Concealed Handgun Permit Applications must be submitted to the County Sheriff's Office in the County where you reside, own property or own a business. Delta County will only process applications for residents of Delta County, Colorado.
- Applicants must be at least 21 years old at the time of the application.

Applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit - New Applicant
Before applying for a Concealed Handgun Permit, all applicants must:
- Complete an 8-hour Concealed Handgun Training Class taught by a firearms instructor verified by the Delta County Sheriff.
- Must include a passing score on a written concealed handgun competency exam and a live-fire exercise
- Have original proof of training certificate dated within one (1) year of your application date.
- Applicants must complete a Fingerprint based criminal background check as part of the application process.
Renewing your Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP)
Concealed Handgun Permit holders who reside in Delta County and wish to renew their CHP must do the following:
- You may not apply for a renewal of your permit until 120 days prior to the expiration date shown on the permit
- If your permit is expired by more than 6-months, you must begin the process with a NEW application to include the new Application Fees and a valid training certificate.
- If your CHP is lost, stolen or destroyed, you must contact the Sheriff's Office within three (3) business days.
- Applicants must show competence with one of the following:
- Participation in organized shooting competitions, current military service or current certification as a peace officer,
- Serve as a verified instructor for firearms safety courses,
- Have an honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces or be retired from a Colorado law enforcement agency with pistol qualifications within 10-years of submitting a renewal application,
- Complete a 2-hour concealed handgun refresher class from a Verified Instructor within 6-months prior to submitting a renewal application (must include a passing score on a written concealed handgun competency exam and a live-fire exercise).

Concealed Handgun Permit General Requirements
- Classes must be taught in person by a Verified Concealed Handgun Instructor in Delta County
- No portion of the class may be held online.
- Classes must meet the requirements of the federal “Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990”.
Requirements for new Concealed Handgun Permits:
- All applicants must complete an 8-hour Concealed Handgun Training course taught by a Delta County Verified Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor within one (1) year of application submission. The list of Verified Instructors in Delta County can be found here .
- Concealed Handgun Course certificates are only valid for one (1) year.
Elements Required for New Concealed Handgun Training Class
- Required Duration: Minimum of 8 hours. This does not need to be consecutive.
- Required instructor led education covering topics defined in Colorado Revised Statute 18-12-202.5.
- Students are required to complete a live-fire exercise on a range, discharging at least 50 rounds with a minimum accuracy score of 70%. This does not need to be conducted in a single day.
- Students are required to complete a written Concealed Handgun Competency exam, which tests the student’s knowledge of the subjects described in C.R.S 18-12-205.5 (3)(a) to (3)(f), with a minimum score of 80%. This exam must be an open-book exam.
Requirements for Renewal of an Active Concealed Handgun Permit
- All applications submitted after JULY 1, 2025 must have completed a course taught by a VERIFIED INSTRUCTOR within six (6) months of application submission.

- Renewal (aka refresher class) Concealed Handgun Course certificates are only good for SIX (6) MONTHS.
- Refresher class certificates are not valid to use to apply for a new Concealed Handgun Permit.
Elements Required for Refresher Class for Concealed Handgun Permit Renewal
- Required Duration: Minimum of 2 hours.
- Require students to complete a live-fire exercise on a range, discharging at least 50 rounds with a minimum accuracy score of 70%.
- Instruction on changes to federal and state laws related to firearms enacted within five (5) years prior to the refresher class.
- Require students to complete a written Concealed Handgun Competency exam, which tests a student’s knowledge of the subjects described in C.R.S 18-12- 205.5 (3)(a) to (3)(f), with a minimum score of 80%. This exam must be an open-book exam.

Thank you for taking the time to complete all the required training requirements to apply for or renew your Concealed Handgun Permit in Delta County. All applications are now processed online via Permitium. This is an online permit management system used by County Sheriff's Offices across Colorado to process Concealed Handgun Permits.
If you do not find the information you need or cannot complete the application process online due to a disability or special circumstance and need assistance, you may contact the Sheriff's Office at 970-874-2008 and we will assist you. If you do not have a computer, there is a computer terminal at the Sheriff's Office lobby in Delta where you can complete your application.

Your Background Check and Appointments for your Concealed Handgun Permit:
For Initial Background Check Fingerprinting - What to Expect and Bring:
- Please allow for approximately 30 minutes to complete the fingerprinting process.
- Arrive on-time for your appointment and report to Court Security at the Delta County Courthouse - 501 Palmer Street in Delta
- If you are going to be delayed, you must call 970-874-2008 and notify that you will be delayed otherwise your appointment may be cancelled.
- Bring your Government-Issued Photo ID - typically your Colorado Driver's License or State ID Card
For Final Appointment to Sign Application and Get Permit - What to Expect and Bring:
On the date of your scheduled appointment at the Sheriff's Office to apply for or renew your Concealed Handgun Permit, please come prepared with the following documentation:
- Your Colorado Driver's License or Photo ID
- The original Certificate Issued by a Verified Concealed Handgun Permit Instructor in Delta County - Copies will NOT be accepted.
- Be prepared to have your photo taken for your new permit.
All appointments are at the Delta County Sheriff's Office located at 211 W 6th Street in Delta. The entrance to the building is on 6th Street.
